DX season is in full swing! I snagged five new NDB loggings! Most were lower power and/or under 500 miles away with the exception of GW out of Kuujjuarapik – located at the southern shore of the great Hudson Bay!
GW has beaten out YFM 332 as the northernmost MW/LW transmission from North America that I’ve ever logged!

The atmospheric conditions last night/this morning were very very favorable. DXing was remarkable to the north and northwest. I received a slew of new NDB loggings – including quite a few lower power NDB’s from north of the border. I also logged my third US state on the NDB arena – New York.
This was the first decent night of DX since I acquired a Sony ICF-SW7600SR. I do take issue with the radio for a couple of reasons – FM is trash and I do receive images of MW on the LW band. However using USB on LW above 250 kHz is very very good. The antenna does out perform the one in the Tecsun PL-660.

New longwave beacon logging!! Sandwiched between ML 392 from La Malbaie Quebec and DDP booming in from Puerto Rico on 389 was little old 3B from just north of Brockville Ontario. This is a new logging and it is also my first new beacon logging of 2014! Just when I think I cant possibly DX another previously unheard beacon, one shows up!

I logged a new transatlantic LW broadcast – Deutschlandradio Kultur on 177kHz. The signal was constant and both music and talk were very listenable on my Sangean ATS-505. The transmitter location is in Zehlendorf in Brandenburg. That puts the distance at approximately 3780mi/6080km.

Transatlantic conditions for longwave broadcast stations from Europe were very favorable this evening. Not only was BBC 4 unusually clear and listenable but so was Radio Monte Carlo 216kHz which was a new logging for me!

Tonight it was the usual suspects with the beacons, albeit weaker reception than other times of the year. I happened upon K1QAR’s experimental station WG2XSB – transmitting morse/CW. He reports he was broadcasting at 600 milliwatts on 482kHz at the time. Shout out to Ted K1QAR! This is my first new logging of the year.

This was an amazing night… I logged four new NDB’s. I logged my third US state – New Jersey. The only other states logged for beacons are my home state of Massachusetts and coastal North Carolina. The other three new loggings are all from Ontario. Ottawa on 236kHz which I’m suprised I haven’t logged before, Bracebridge/Muskoka on 272kHz and Sudbury on 362kHz. The odd thing about Sudbury was the absence of the much nearer Sherbrooke QC on the same frequency which I logged earlier in the month.

Amazing Catch!!!
Conditions were amazing for this Caribbean this night. Cubans were dominating the AM band. I did a quick LW band scan and found DDP from just west of San Juan PR overpowering my regional NDB from Provincetown MA. This was a new logging and my current record for most distant NDB received. My previous record was BX 220 kHz from Blanc Sablon Quebec at 905mi/1455km. The salt water path and atmospheric conditions worked their magic. Keep in mind I dont use external antennas… only internal ferrite.
Here is a recording of my catch:
